General Information

The John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation was established in 1925 by United States Senator Simon Guggenheim and his wife as a memorial to a son who died April 26, 1922. The Foundation offers Fellowships to further the development of scholars and artists by assisting them to engage in research in any field of knowledge and creation in any of the arts, under the freest possible conditions and irrespective of race, color, or creed.

Eligibility

Fellowships are awarded through two annual  competitions: one open to citizens and permanent residents of the United States and Canada, and the other open to citizens and permanent residents of Latin America and the Caribbean. The Fellowships will be awarded by the Trustees upon nominations made by a Committee of Selection.

The Fellowships are awarded to men and women who have already demonstrated exceptional capacity for productive scholarship or exceptional creative ability in the arts. The Foundation consults with distinguished scholars and artists regarding the accomplishments and promise of the applicants and presents this evidence to the Committee of Selection.

Appointments are ordinarily made for one year, and in no instance for a period shorter than six consecutive months.

The amounts of the grants will be adjusted to the needs of the Fellows, considering their other resources and the purpose and scope of their plans.

Members of the teaching profession receiving sabbatical leave on full or part salary are eligible for appointment, as are holders of other Fellowships and of appointments at research centers.

Thanks to the generosity of the Leon Levy Foundation, some Fellows with no academic or institutional affiliation receive supplemental funding as part of their Guggenheim Fellowship to help cover their research and cost of living. Mr. Levy, a pioneer of both mutual funds and hedge funds, was a humanist with a passion for expanding knowledge. He was an active and generous trustee of the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation from 1990 until his death in 2003. For more information about the Leon Levy Foundation, please visit www.leonlevyfoundation.org.

In 2008 the Foundation awarded 190 United States and Canadian Fellowships for a total of $8,200,000 (an average grant of $43,200). There were more than 2,600 applicants.

In 2007 the Foundation awarded 35 Latin American and Caribbean Fellowships for a total of $1,200,000 (an average grant of $34,285). There were 395 applicants.

The 2008 United States and Canadian Committee of Selection consisted of Neil J. Smelser, Chair, Roger D. Abrahams, John L. Brauman, Lynn A. Hunt, Jack Miles, and Peter Raven.

The 2007 Latin American and Caribbean Committee of Selection consisted of Guillermo Jaim-Etcheverry, Chair, Sabine G. MacCormack, Sylvia Molloy, María Teresa Ruiz, and Peter H. Smith.

The Foundation may subsidize the publication of important contributions to knowledge produced by holders of Fellowships, but it does not undertake to aid in publishing all works so produced.

The application forms for Fellowships can be downloaded from the Foundation's website, www.gf.org. Requests for application forms can be sent to John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, 90 Park Avenue, New York, N.Y. 10016.
