Born April 24, 1905, at Guthrie, Kentucky.  Education:  Vanderbilt University, B.A., 1925; University of California, M.A., 1927; Yale University, 1927–28; University of Oxford, B.Litt., 1930 (Rhodes Scholar, New College).

Assistant Professor of English, 1930–31, Southwestern College; Acting Assistant Professor of English, 1931–34, Vanderbilt University; Assistant Professor of English, 1934–36, Associate Professor, 1936—, Louisiana State University. Visiting Lecturer, University of Montana, Summer, 1935; University of Colorado Writers Conference, Summers, 1935, 1936. Managing Editor, Southern Review.
