Donald Ray Pollock grew up in Knockemstiff, Ohio, and is a lifelong resident of that state. He worked thirty-two years as a laborer in a paper mill in Chillicothe before enrolling in the M.F.A. program at Ohio State University in 2005. His first book, Knockemstiff, a collection of short stories, was awarded the PEN/Robert Bingham Fellowship for Emerging Writers in 2009. His second book, The Devil All the Time, was listed by Publisher's Weekly as one of the ten best books of 2011.
