Blane De St. Croix

Blane De St. Croix’s recent body of work explores the geopolitical landscape through drawing and sculptural installation.  De St. Croix conducts extensive research on each project—through site visits, photographic documentation, interviews, and satellite imagery.  Employing a combination of natural and industrial materials, he is interested in articulating humankind’s desire to take command over the earth, revealing distinct conflicts with ecology, politics, and ourselves, in large-scale installations that utilize architectural space in a distinct, powerful, and imposing manner.

Blane De St. Croix’s work has been included in numerous solo and group exhibitions nationally and internationally in venues that include F.A.R.@ASU (Future Arts Research), Phoenix, Arizona; Black and White Project Space, Brooklyn, New York; Smack Mellon, Brooklyn; the New York Center for Art and Media Studies; DeCordova Museum and Sculpture Park, Lincoln, Massachusetts; Djerassi Sculpture Park, Woodside, California; The Institute for Contemporary Art, Palm Beach; and Laumeier Sculpture Park, St. Louis, Missouri.

In addition to his Guggenheim Fellowship, De St. Croix has been awarded numerous grants, fellowships, and residencies.  Selected awards include the Joan Mitchell Foundation Grant for Painters and Sculptors; a Pollock Krasner Foundation grant; a Black and White Project Space prize; a regional NEA Artist Fellowship in Sculpture; two South Florida Cultural Consortium Fellowships for Visual and Media Artists; John Michael Kohler Arts Center Foundry artist’s residency; a Gasworks Artist Studio residency, London; a Tyrone Guthrie Center residency, Ireland; two MacDowell Colony fellowships; an Art Omi artist’s residency; an artist’s residency at the Abrons Art Center, New York; an Artist Alliance Studio Program and Special Editions Residency, Lower East Side Printshop, in New York.

Blane De St. Croix was born in Boston, Massachusetts.  He was educated at Cranbrook Academy of Art (M.F.A. in sculpture) and the Massachusetts College of Art (B.F.A., with distinction, in sculpture).  Previously he was a Visiting Assistant Professor at Whittier College and is currently a Visiting Associate Professor at Arizona State University and an Associate Professor at Florida Atlantic University.  He lives and works in both Brooklyn and South Florida.
