Born October 16, 1890, at Watkins, New York. Education:  Amherst College, B.A., 1911 (Rufus B. Kellogg Fellow, 1914–17, 1919–21); Columbia University, A.M., 1914, Ph.D., 1929 (President’s Scholar, 1913–14).

Instructor in English, 1921–23, Assistant Professor, 1923–26, Associate Professor, 1926—, Washington University, St. Louis; Summer School, Columbia University, 1922, 1924, Washington University, 1925–29, State University of Iowa, 1930, University of Chicago, 1931.
