Born March 11, 1904, St. Joseph, Missouri.  Education:  University of California, A.B., 1925, Ph.D., 1929; University of Chicago, Summer, 1926. Traveling Fellow of the University of California at the Universities of Göttingen and Berlin, 1927–28.
