COWELL, HENRY DIXON:  Appointed for a study of materials used in extra-European music systems, to be carried on chiefly in the phonographic archives of the University of Berlin; tenure, twelve months from October 1, 1931.

Born March 11, 1897, at Menlo Park, California. Education: Attended musical courses at the University of California, 1913-16; studies privately with Wallace Sabin; studied at the Institute of Applied Music, New York City.

Compositions performed by Havana Philharmonic Orchestra, Boston Chamber Orchestra, Los Angeles Little Symphony Orchestra, League of Composers, Copland-Sessions Concerts, Rochester Symphony Orchestra, and others.

Publications:  New Musical Resources, 1930. Articles in Century, American Journal of Psychology, New Freeman, New Republic, Musical America, Modern Music, Pro Musica Quarterly, and other periodicals in America and Europe. Editor of New Music Quarterly.
