Alan M. Stahl

Alan Stahl is a medieval historian whose specialties include coinage and monetary history and Venice.  He received his Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1977 with a dissertation on "The Merovingian Coinage of the Region of Metz," which became his first book (published Louvain-la-Neuve, 1982).  His other books include The Venetian Tornesello: A Medieval Colonial Coinage (New York, 1985) and Zecca: The Mint of Venice in the Middle Ages (Baltimore, 2000).  He was Curator of Medieval Coins at the American Numismatic Society from 1980 to 2000 and has taught at the Università di Venezia, the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and Rice University.  He is currently Curator of Numismatics at Princeton University, where he also teaches in the Classics and History departments. He is co-director of the Michael of Rhodes Project and co-editor of the three-volume publication of The Book of Michael Rhodes: A Fifteenth Century Maritime Miscellany (Cambridge, 2009).  The subject of his 2008 Guggenheim project is "The Nexus of Wealth and Power in Medieval Venice."
