James Grier

James Grier is professor of music history at the University of Western Ontario and Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada.  His principal areas of research are music and liturgy in medieval Aquitaine, textual criticism and editing music, and popular music since World War II.  He is the author of The Critical Editing of Music (Cambridge University Press, 1996; Spanish translation 2008), The Musical World of a Medieval Monk:  Adémar de Chabannes in Eleventh-Century Aquitaine (Cambridge University Press, 2006), and Ademarus Cabannensis monachus et musicus, Corpus Christianorum, Autographa Medii Aevi, 7 (Brepols, 2018); and he has prepared a critical edition of the music written in Adémar’ hand, Ademari Cabannensis Opera Omnia Pars II.  Opera liturgica et poetica:  Musica cum textibus, Corpus Christianorum Continuatio Mediaevalis, 245, 245A (Brepols, 2012).  His articles have appeared in Journal of the American Musicological Society, Revue d’ des Textes, Speculum, Scriptorium and Journal of Medieval Latin.  He has received support through the Edward T. Cone Membership in Music Studies (Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton), a Killam Research Fellowship, Fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the American Council of Learned Societies, and six grants from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada.
