Fellow: Awarded 2020
Field of Study: Music Composition

Competition: US & Canada

Maya Milenovic Workman started creating stage stories at 17 and found a junction across impulse produced by jazz music and physical theater. In collaboration with jazz legend Reggie Workman, she created original works and produced & performed at Carnegie Recital Hall, Cathedral of Saint John The Divine, Washington Square Church, Cooper Union Great Hall, Brooklyn Gowanus Arts Exchange, and State Theaters in Slovenia, Serbia, the UK, and Italy.

“In the process of creation I seek original expression while all forces that are established are equal and can oppose one another. These forces can cancel each other on stage outright. Violent or idealized circumstantial thought processes and evidence of real issues become a new physical experience and emotional language!”

Maya was born in Slovenia (Yugoslavia), earned a BA equivalent at the London School of Contemporary Dance, BA and an MA in Media (New School). She studied with Merce Cunningham (NYC) and Howard Gardner (Project Zero).

Maya co-founded Montclair Academy & Laboratory of Dance, Drum and Drama, and established a “teaching methodology“, that every pupil has a talent. After hiatus, her collaborations with Reggie Workman are original story: DOS WORLDS, and children’s book Ms. G Clef’s Party.
