Amie Thomasson

Amie L. Thomasson is the Daniel P. Stone Professor of Intellectual and Moral Philosophy at Dartmouth College. She has worked extensively on problems in metaphysics, philosophy of art, philosophy of fiction, social ontology, and phenomenology. Her recent work centers on questions about what philosophy can legitimately do, and how we can do it. As the natural sciences have taken priority in discovering facts about what the world is like, what role, if any, is left for philosophy? What can we hope for philosophy to contribute to human knowledge, and to human life?

She has published more than 80 articles and book chapters, and four books: Norms and Necessity, Ontology Made Easy (winner of the Sanders Book Prize), Ordinary Objects, and Fiction and Metaphysics. She also co-edited (with David W. Smith) Phenomenology and Philosophy of Mind. She has twice held Fellowships with the National Endowment for the Humanities, and was Anderson Distinguished Fellow at the University of Sydney, Australia. She gave the Wedburg Lectures at the University of Stockholm, the Whitehead Lectures at Harvard University, and in 2022 will present the Anna Tumarkin lectures at the University of Bern, Switzerland, and the Pufendorf lectures at Lund University, Sweden.
