Ben Marcus is the author of two novels, The Flame Alphabet and Notable American Women, and a collection of short stories, The Age of Wire and String.  His new book, Leaving the Sea, will be published by Knopf in January 2014.  His stories have appeared in Harper’s, Granta, The New Yorker, The Paris Review, Tin House, Electric Literature, and Conjunctions.  He is the editor of The Anchor Book of New American Short Stories and he serves as the fiction editor for The American Reader.  He has received a Whiting Writers Award, an NEA in Fiction, a literature award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and a grant from Creative Capital.  He is on the faculty at Columbia University, where he teaches in the School of the Arts.  In the fall of 2013 he will be a Berlin Prize Fellow at the American Academy in Berlin.
