Born July 4, 1902, at Denver, Colorado. Education:  University of Colorado, 1918–19; Princeton University, A.B., 1923, A.M., 1924 (Scribner Fellow, 1923–24); University of Oxford, D.Phil., 1928 (Rhodes Scholar, Merton College).

Instructor in English, 1927–31, Assistant Professor, 1931—, Princeton University.
