Born April 5, 1897, at Franklin, Tennessee. Education:  Vanderbilt University, A.B., 1919, M.A., 1922; Yale University, Ph.D., 1930. 

Instructor in English, 1919–21, Southwestern University; Instructor in English, 1922–24, Assistant Professor, 1924–25, Randolph-Macon Woman’s College; Associate Professor of English, 1927–29, Professor, 1929—, Chairman of the Department, 1932–35, Sarah Lawrence College.

Publications:  Articles in Sewanee Review, Modern Language Review, Studies in Philology, Journal of English and Germanic Philology.
