Eugenia Kumacheva started her journey in Chemistry at the age of fifteen. Her current research endeavors are in the field of soft materials, including polymers, colloids, liquid crystals, hydrogels, and living matter, with applications ranging from optical data storage to biometrics to tissue engineering to drug discovery and delivery. Eugenia is the recipient of multiple national and international distinctions, including Canada Research Chair (Tier 1), Canada Institute for Chemistry medal, Killam Fellowship, International Chorafas Foundation Award in Physics and Engineering, Humboldt Research Award, De Gennes Prize, and the 2009 L'Oreal-UNESCO Award “For Women in Science” (given to 5 laureates in the world, one from each continent). Eugenia is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and Royal Society (U.K.) and is recognized as an Officer of The Order of Canada, one of the country’s highest civilian honours.
