Berkowitz, Hyman Chonon:  Appointed to make a study of Benito Pérez Galdós, and of the importance of his contribution to Spanish life and letters, in Europe; tenure, twelve months from September 15, 1930.

Born January 27, 1895, at Slootsk, Lithuania. Education: Cornell University, A.B., 1917, M.A., 1918, Ph.D., 1924 (Pulitzer Scholar, 1913–17; University Teaching Fellow in Romance Languages, 1917–18).

Instructor in Spanish, Columbia High School, South Orange, New Jersey, 1919–20; Instructor in Romance Languages and Literature, Cornell University, 1920–24; Instructor in Spanish, Cornell University, Summer Sessions of 1923 and 1925; Instructor in Romance Languages, 1924–26, Assistant Professor, 1926—, University of Wisconsin.

Publications: Translator and editor (with S. A. Wofsy) of “La Vida de Lazarillo de Tormes,” 1927; editor (with S. A. Wofsy) of Jovellanos’ “El Delincuente Honrado,” 1927; editor of Galdós’ “El Abuelo,” 1929.
