Born September 8, 1912, Milwaukee, Wisconsin.  Education:  University of Wisconsin, B.A., 1935, M.A., 1936; Washington University, St. Louis, Missouri, Ph.D., 1939 (Van Blarcom Scholarship, 1938–39).
