Born March 24, 1910, in New York City. Education:  Columbia University, A.B., 1929, Ph.D., 1933; studies at the Universities of Nancy and Paris and the École des Hautes Êtudes, 1927–31.

Research Assistant in French, 1933—, Columbia University; Tutor in French, 1933–35, Instructor, 1936—, Brooklyn College.
