John Wilmerding is Christopher B. Sarofim ’86 Professor of American Art, Emeritus, at Princeton University and adjunct curator in the Princeton University Art Museum. Formerly, he was a visiting curator in the Department of American Art at the Metropolitan Museum, and has also served as Senior Curator and Deputy Director of the National Gallery of Art in Washington. He is currently chairman of the board of trustees of the National Gallery and a trustee of the Guggenheim Museum, the new Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Arkansas, and the Wyeth Foundation for American Art. A noted scholar of American art and cultural studies, he is author of monographs on Fitz Henry Lane, John F. Peto, Winslow Homer, and Thomas Eakins. Most recently, he has published books on conteporary artists like Richard Estes, Robert Indiana, and Tom Wesselmann. He is currently pursuing research for an exhibition on Frederic Church’s drawings in Maine as well as an Indiana print retrospective.
