Jordanna Bailkin

Jordanna Bailkin is the Jere L. Bacharach Endowed Professor in International Studies at the University of Washington, where she teaches British, European, and imperial history. In addition to her full-time appointment in History, she also serves as an affiliate or adjunct faculty member in African Studies, the Center for West European Studies, the Department of Gender, Women and Sexuality Studies, Museology, the Program on the Built Environment, and South Asian Studies. Her books include The Culture of Property (Chicago, 2004), The Afterlife of Empire (Berkeley, 2012), and Unsettled (Oxford, 2018). Her new work is on emotion and the welfare state. Broadly, she is interested in how people reshape their relationships to each other and themselves against the background of political, social, and economic change. A graduate of Tufts University and Stanford University, she now lives in Seattle.
