Kathy Butterly

Kathy Butterly is an artist based in New York City. She considers her works to be both sculpture and painting. Standing on average four to eight inches tall, Butterly’s ceramic works have large personalities which command attention. Her approach to work is unique in that she fires each piece fifteen to forty times.  This allows her to add form and color, which helps determine the content and direction of each sculpture.  Each of Butterly’s works possess individual personalities.

Kathy’s work is represented by the Tibor de Nagy Gallery in New York City and the Shoshana Wayne Gallery in Santa Monica. Butterly has been the subject of twenty-two solo exhibitions, including Freaks and Beauties, Opener 10: Kathy Butterly at the Tang Museum, and numerous group exhibitions, most notably Figuring Color; Kathy Butterly, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Roy McMakin, Sue Williams, Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston; Dirt on Delight: Impulses that Form Clay, Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia, and the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; Pretty is as Pretty Does, SITE Sante Fe, and the 2005 Carnegie International, Pittsburgh.

Among her awards are the 2012 Smithsonian American Art Museum Contemporary Artist Award, 2011 Pollack-Krasner Foundation Grant, 2009 and 1999 New York Foundation for the Arts Grant, Joan Mitchell Foundation: Painters & Sculptors Grant, 2007 Artist Legacy Foundation Award, and the 2007 Anonymous Was a Woman Grant. Her works are in the permanent collections of a number of institutions, including the Brooklyn Museum, Carnegie Museum of Art, Currier Museum of Art, Detroit Institute of Art, Smithsonian American Art Museum, Museum of Fine Arts Boston, Museum of Modern Art, and Tang Museum.
