Mannes, Leopold Damrosch: Appointed for creative work in musical composition, and for a study of musical literature, in particular early vocal music, abroad; tenure, twelve months from May 15, 1926.

Born December 26, 1899, in New York City. Education: Harvard University, A.B. (3 years), John Harvard Scholarship, 1920; private instruction in music since age seven; studied elementary harmony and counterpoint under Henius, Goetschius and Schreyer; later studied composition intensively for five years with Scalero; several years of piano study, also violin and organ; Pulitzer Traveling Fellowship, 1924–25, used for composition, in the United States and in Italy.

Teacher of elementary theory, David Mannes Music School, 1921–26; lecturer on musical subjects.

Recent Compositions: “Variations for Piano on a Theme by Dvorak,” and “Suite for Two Pianos,” (1923), (performed Carnegie Hall, April 24, 1925, by Bauer and Gabrilowitsch); “Four Songs,” (1924), “Introduction and Allegro for Violin and Piano,” (1924), “Suite for Orchestra (Prelude, Aria and Chorale)”, (1924), “String Quartette,” (1925–1926), (performed New York Public Library, March 3, 1926, by the Lenox Quartette).
