Leopold Mannes

Mannes, Leopold Damrosch: Appointed for creative work in musical composition, and for a study of musical literature, in particular early vocal music, abroad; tenure, twelve months from May 15, 1926.

Born December 26, 1899, in New York City. Education: Harvard University, A.B. (3 years), John Harvard Scholarship, 1920; private instruction in music since age seven; studied elementary harmony and counterpoint under Henius, Goetschius and Schreyer; later studied composition intensively for five years with Scalero; several years of piano study, also violin and organ; Pulitzer Traveling Fellowship, 1924–25, used for composition, in the United States and in Italy.

Teacher of elementary theory, David Mannes Music School, 1921–26; lecturer on musical subjects.
