Mark Wessel

Wessel, Mark:  Appointed for creative work in musical composition, abroad; tenure, twelve months from January 1, 1931.

Born March 26, 1894, at Coldwater, Michigan.  Education: Northwestern University School of Music, Mus. B., 1918, Mus. M., 1920; studied with Schönberg in Vienna, 1922–23. Pulitzer Travelling Scholarship in Music, 1930–31.

Instructor in Piano and Theory, 1919–22, Assistant Professor, 1924–28, Northwestern University School of Music.

Principal Compositions: Scherzo-Burlesque, a work for piano solo and orchestra, performed by Rochester Little Symphony Orchestra, Howard Hanson conducting, in Rochester, and by Chicago Little Symphony Orchestra, George Dasch conducting, in Evanston and La Grange, Illinois, 1926; Concertino for Flute, performed by the Rochester Little Symphony Orchestra, Howard Hanson conducting, in Rochester, 1928; Symphony-Concertante for orchestra with horn and piano solo parts, performed by the Budapest Philharmonic Orchestra, 1929, by Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, Howard Hanson conducting, Rochester, 1930, and performed in radio concerts, Walter Damrosch conducting, 1930.
