Mary Kocol

Mary Kocol is a fine art and editorial photographer. Her fine art pictures are among the permanent collections of the New York Museum of Modern Art, J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Victoria and Albert Museum in London, Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts, and others. Ms. Kocol’s early work was exhibited in the groundbreaking exhibition and subsequent catalog Pleasures and Terrors of Domestic Comfort at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1991. Gallery NAGA represents her work in Boston, Massachusetts.

Her fine art pictures were published in Aperture, Communication Arts Photography Annual, DoubleTake, Art News, Camera and Darkroom, New York Magazine, Boston Globe, and more. Editorial assignments include Doubleday Books, New York Times Magazine, Washington Post Magazine, Boston Magazine, Architectural Record Magazine, and others.

Ms. Kocol also created a series of three photo-animated short films that were recognized in film festivals around the world. My Father’s Story won a Special Jury Prize at the Hiroshima 2000 International Animation Film Festival, and also screened in Spain, Germany, and extensively in the United States. She’s a recipient of the 1999 Massachusetts Media Fellowship, a LEF Foundation Grant, and various art grants from the Somerville Arts Council for both photography and animation.

Born in Hartford, Connecticut, she was educated at University of Connecticut (BA) and Rhode Island School of Design (MFA, Photography). She currently lives and works in the Boston area.
