With youthful disobedience, Michael Jang (b. 1951) secretly documented the sub-cultural circles of a San Francisco that he took part in shaping, pioneering the visibility of Asian American culture through images of his imaginative home life; and, with a keen sense of timing, iconic moments in California history. A subversive and brazen photographer, Jang captured images from the front lines and behind-the-scenes of historic events. His determined approach is textured by his signature spontaneous style, exposing a narrative of pure joy and candid jest. Jang’s photographs are in the collections of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Cantor Arts Center, Asian Art Museum, Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive, New York Public Library, Royal Ontario Museum, and the Museum of Modern Art, among others.
