Patrick Nickell

Born in 1960 in Van Nuys, California, Patrick Nickell received a B.A. in Art from Linfield College in 1983 and his M.F.A. in sculpture from Claremont Graduate University in 1985.

In 2003 a traveling mid-career survey of his work curated by Julie Joyce, titled Patrick Nickell, Built for Speed, A Sculpture Survey, chronicled his early work as a sculptor and traced its development and distinctiveness within a broader cultural context of national and international contemporary art-making of that time period. Consisting of a selection of works completed over the fifteen-year period 1988–2003, this exhibition was initially on view at the Luckman Gallery at California State University, Los Angeles, from May 24 to July 12. After that debut,  the exhibition traveled to the Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art, Utah State University  (August 30–December 4, 2004) and University of Texas, San Antonio, Department of Art and Art History, Art Gallery (January 20 to February 27, 2005). This exhibition was nominated by the International Association of Art Critics (AICA) USA Division in the category of  “Best University Gallery Exhibition.”

Patrick Nickell’s work is in the permanent collections of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (MOCA); Luckman Fine Arts Gallery at California State University, Los Angeles; Laguna Beach Museum of Art; Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art at Utah State University; Santa Barbara Museum of Art; Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA); and the Berkeley Art Museum at the University of California. He is represented by the Rosamund Felsen Gallery in Santa Monica, California.

Patrick Nickell is Associate Professor in the Design Foundation, School of Media Culture and Design, at Woodbury University in Burbank, California. Mr. Nickell believes a “foundation education provides a platform for lifelong success in the ever changing landscape of creative careers within art and design professions.”
