I am the author of two books of poems, Other People (2005) and The Lions (2009). Both were published by the University of Chicago Press. I am also the author of a monograph on the painter Mitchell Johnson, which was published in 2004 by Terrence Rogers Fine Art. My poems and prose apprear regularly in such publications as AGNI, ArtNews, The Boston Globe, Modern Painters, The New Republic, The New York Times Book Review, Poetry, Slate, and The Yale Review. I am Editor-in-Chief of the journal Literary Imagination (Oxford UP). I teach English and Creative Writing at Auburn University.

My honors include a Stegner Fellowship and Jones Lectureship at Stanford University, from 2001 to 2006; a Pushcart Prize in 2008; a Civitella Ranieri Individual Artist’s Fellowship, granted in 2009; a Joseph Brodsky Rome Prize Fellowship in Literature from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, for 2009-10; and The Larry Levis Reading Prize, awarded by Virginia Commonwealth University in 2010 for my book The Lions.
