Peter J. Filkins

Peter Filkins is the author of the biography H.G. Adler: A Life in Many Worlds (2019), as well as five collections of poetry, including The View We’re Granted (2012) and Water / Music (2021). He has also translated the complete poems of Ingeborg Bachmann, Darkness Spoken (2006), and her two novel fragments, The Book of Franza and Requiem for Fanny Goldmann (1999), as well as three novels by H.G. Adler, The Journey (2008), Panorama (2011), and The Wall (2014). He is the recipient of fellowships from the Leon Levy Center for Biography, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the American Academy in Berlin, and the Fulbright Commission, as well as writing residencies at MacDowell, Yaddo, Millay, the James Merrill House, the Tyrone Guthrie Centre, and Hawthornden Castle. His awards include a 1995 Outstanding Translation Award from the American Literary Translators Association, a 2007 Distinguished Translation Award from the Austrian Ministry, the 2010 New American Press Chapbook Award, and the 2013 Sheila Margaret Motton Best Book Prize from the New England Poetry Club. He serves as the Richard B. Fisher Professor of Literature & Creative Writing at Bard College at Simon’s Rock, and teaches courses in translation at Bard College.
