Born May 8, 1904, Martinsville, Indiana.  Education:  University of Illinois, 1921–22; Indiana University, A.B., 1925; University of Oxford, B.A., 1928 (Rhodes Scholar, Balliol College).

Instructor in Philosophy, 1930–37, Assistant Professor, 1937–38, University of Cincinnati; Associate Professor of Philosophy, Kenyon College, 1938—. Managing Editor, Kenyon Review, 1938—.
