Roy Harris

Harris, Roy Ellsworth: Appointed for creative work in musical composition, abroad; tenure, twelve months from September 1, 1927.

Born February 12, 1898, in Lincoln County, Oklahoma. Education: University of California; studied organ with Ernest Douglas, ear training with Fannie Charles Dillon, composition with Arthur Farwell, and orchestration with Modest Altschuler and Arthur Bliss.

Instructor in harmony and ear training, Hollywood Conservatory of Music.

Compositions: “Song without Words,” for mixed chorus and two pianos (1922); “Nocturne,” for piano (1922); “My Love Is Like a Red, Red Rose,” (Burns), song for soprano and piano (1922); Variations on Mexican Folk Song, “Puena Hueca,” for mixed chorus, piano, biolin and violoncello, first performed by Pasadena Community Chorus under Arthur Farwell (1924); “Adante,” for symphony orchestra, first performed by Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, under Howard Hanson (1925); “Suite for String Quartet,” (1925); three pieces for string quartet (1926); “Four Movement Sextette” for strings, clarinet and piano (1926), first performed by Société Musicale Indépendante, Paris, 1927.
