Saar Harari, modern dancer and choreographer, was born in Israel in 1973. He attended the Bat Dor Dance School in Tel Aviv while he was young, before joining the Israeli army as a Special Forces commander of the counterterrorism and hostage-rescue team. After serving for six years, he left the army to return to dance.

As a lead dancer and teacher for Liat Dror, Nir Ben Gal Company, he performed throughout Israel and Europe. While working as an independent choreographer, he performed with the Noa Dar Dance Company in Israel and Japan, and spent three years as a dance workshop instructor at Bet Tami for the Arts in Israel. From 2002 to 2004 he also served as the head of Dance Training at Dalia’s Studio in Israel before becoming an instructor at The Puffin Room and the Jewish Community Center in New York.

In 2000 he cofounded LeeSaar The Company with actress and playwright Lee Sher, and won a scholarship from the Mosmon Art Gallery to perform the piece Ester. They moved the company to New York in 2004. The company’s repertoire includes Ester, Herd of Bulls, Moopim, and Part II, performed at such venues as Columbia University, the White Wave Festival, and Ailey Theater. The piece Geisha will premiere in June 2009 at Performance Space 122, and will then tour to Poland, Hungary, and Israel. Mr. Harari was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship to work on Geisha and an additional piece, e-katan (Little Island).

He is the recipient of numerous artist residencies, including at the Mosmon Art Gallery in Sydney, and Performance Space 122, the 92nd Street Y, and the Harkness Dance Center in New York City. Mr. Harari is the recipient of the Excellence in the Arts Award from the American-Israeli Foundation for the Arts, as well as a Six Points Fellowship for Emerging Jewish Artists.
