Stathis Gourgouris

Stathis Gourgouris is a poet, essayist, translator, and sound artist living between New York and Athens, who writes and teaches across the disciplines, from literary studies to philosophy, political theory, psychoanalysis, poetics, and experimental music. He is Professor of Classics, English, and Comparative Literature & Society at Columbia University and author of several books in Greek and English, including Dream Nation (25th Anniversary Edition 2021), Does Literature Think? (2003), Introduction to Physics (poetry, 2005), Lessons in Secular Criticism (2013), Contingent Disorders (2016), The Perils of the One (2019). His work has been translated in several European languages, as well as Japanese, Chinese, Turkish, Arabic, and Hebrew. His journalism work in newspapers, radio, television, and internet media addresses contemporary political issues. His sound and poetry collages have been performed or presented at installations on various occasions internationally, including at documenta 14 (2017). A recipient of NEH, Mellon, Lenfest awards, he has served as President of the Modern Greek Studies Association; at the Board of Supervisors of the English Institute, Harvard University; and currently at the Advisory Board of the Cavafy Archive at the Onassis Foundation. His new project combines his music and writing interests to focus on the problem of listening.
