Born May 18, 1901, at New Orleans, Louisiana. Education: Rice Institute, B.A., 1921, M.A., 1924, Ph.D., 1926. National Research Fellow, University of Chicago and Princeton University, 1926–28.

Instructor in Mathematics, 1925–26, Rice Institute; Assistant Professor of Mathematics, 1928–31, Cornell University; Permanent Secretary, 1931–33, American Association for the Advancement of Science.
