Ellen Altfest was born in New York City and received a  B.F.A. and a B.A. from Cornell University and MFA from Yale University. She studied at the Skowhegan School of Sculpture and Painting and received a studio from the Marie Walsh Sharpe Art Foundation. Altfest has also been a fellow at the Chinati Foundation in Marfa Texas, the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, and a resident artist at The Siena Art Institute, Yaddo, the Dorland Mountain art Center and the Vermont Studio Center. In 2006 she was awarded a Richard and Hinda Rosenthal Foundation Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters.  

Altfest’s work has been included in group shows, including USA Today at the Royal Academy in London and the forthcoming It is what it is, Or is it? at the Contemporary Art Museum in Houston, Texas. She has had one person exhibitions at White Cube Gallery, London, in 2007 and 2011. An exhibtion of her work will open at the New Museum in New York City on May 6, 2012.
