Born August 14, 1897, Shelby County, Ohio.  Education:  Otterbein College, 1914–16; Ohio State University, A.B., 1918, B.S., 1919, M.Sc., 1928, Ph.D., 1935. Research in China on bamboo, under grants from China Foundation, 1929, Rockefeller Foundation, 1930 and 1934, and National Research Council, 1936.

Instructor in Horticulture, 1919–23, Assistant Professor of Botany, 1923–28, Curator of Herbarium, 1923–27, Curator of Economic Botany, 1927—, Associate Professor, 1928–31, Professor, 1931—, Lingnan University, Canton, China.
