Born July 31, 1908, Raleigh, North Carolina.  Education: Princeton University, A.B., 1931, Ph.D., 1936 (Sterry Fellow, 1935–36, Eli Lilly and Company Research Fellow, 1936–37); Duke University, A.M., 1932; North Carolina State College of the University of North Carolina, 1933; Vanderbilt University, 1933–34. Fellow of the Rockefeller Foundation in the Netherlands, 1939.
