Frank H. Quina

Frank H. Quina received his Ph.D. in Chemistry from the California Institute of Technology in 1973, where he worked with  George S. Hammond, and then from 1973 to 1975, he pursued postdoctoral studies with David G. Whitten at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  In 1975, he served as a visiting professor at the University of São Paulo (USP), on a National Academy of Sciences Fellowship.  He is currently a professor at the Institute of Chemistry, University of São Paulo, and coordinator of basic research initiatives at CEPEMA-USP, the recently inaugurated USP Center for Training and Research on the Environment in Cubatão, SP.  His research group conducts studies of the photochemistry of natural plant pigments (anthocyanins), the structure and dynamics of organized systems formed by detergents, environmental chemistry, and chemical communication between plants and pollinating insects in tropical rainforest environments.  Studies in collaboration with the Chemical Engineering Department include the photodegradation of pollutants, and the use of spectroscopy to monitor and control industrial processes.

In addition his Guggenheim Fellowship, Frank Quina has been listed in Who’s Who in the World, and was a Visiting Professor at Wake Forest University from 1987 to 1988 and from 1996 to 2005.  He served on the advisory board of the Inter-American Photochemical Society and on the editorial advisory boards of Langmuir, Photochemical and Photobiological Sciences, Photochemistry and Photobiology and the Journal of Colloid and Interface Science.  He has published over 120 scientific papers and book chapters.

Mr. Quina’s four adult children from a previous marriage live in the United States.  He and his wife, Elena, a clinical chemist at the Albert Einstein Hospital in São Paulo, have two sons, born in 1992 and 1999.
