Born August 25, 1890, at Shelter Island Heights, New York. Education: Amherst College, B. A., 1913; Johns Hopkins University, Ph. D., 1917 (Elliott Scholarship, 1914–15; University Scholarship, 1915–16; University of Fellowship in Romance Languages, 1916–17).
