Born March 19, 1892, at Oneonta, New York. Education: Amherst College, A.B., 1913; Columbia University, Ph.D., 1917 (Goldschmidt Fellow, 1915–16). National Research Fellow, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 1923–24.
