Jonathan Bailey Holland is chair of composition, contemporary music, and core studies at Boston Conservatory at Berklee and founding faculty in Music Composition at Vermont College of Fine Arts.
Described as “a craftsman with an ear for effective orchestration, a fine theatrical sense and real skill when it comes to formal layout” (Indianapolis Star), his music has been heralded as “a sunburst of gleaming timbres, the full ensemble resounding in lustrous textures” (South Florida Classical Review).
Holland’s works draw inspiration from art, architecture, current and historical events, the natural environment, and an eclectic range of musical influences. His music has been commissioned and performed by a wide range of today’s leading ensembles, including Eighth Blackbird, Awadagin Pratt, Roomful of Teeth, Odyssey Opera, Los Angeles Philharmonic, and the Cincinnati, Dallas, Detroit, and National Symphony Orchestras, among others.
A native of Flint, Michigan, Holland earned a Ph.D. from Harvard University and a B.M. from Curtis Institute of Music. He has received honors from The Boston Foundation, Civitella Ranieri Foundation, Massachusetts Cultural Council, Fromm Foundation at Harvard University, American Academy of Arts & Letters, American Music Center, ASCAP, The Presser Foundation, and others.
