A self-taught photographer, Argentinean-born Marcelo Coglitore began his career in 1987, working on a series of photographs called Primera Visión (First Vision), which he completed in 1991. The year 2001 marked not only the inception of his project Retratos de personas en su lugar trabajo (Portraits of people in their workplace) but his winning of the Second Award in the Salón Nacional de Artes Visuales. In 2006, the Fondo Nacional de las Artes named him a National Fellow, and in addition to his Guggenheim Fellowship he received a grant from the Fondo Metropolitano de la Cultura, las Artes y las Ciencias the following year. While still working on his Retratos de personas en su lugar de trabajo series, in 2008 he began a new project, entitled Rankül.
