Paul Werth

Paul Werth is Professor of History at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and has held fellowships in the US, Germany, France, and Japan. His previous research focused on the problem of religious freedom in the Russian Empire and the role of religious institutions and minorities in imperial governance. He has published four books, most recently 1837: Russia’s Quiet Revolution (Oxford, 2021).

His interests have turned more recently to problems of territory, sovereignty, and borders in Eurasian history. As a Guggenheim Fellow he will work on a book entitled Russia’s Enclosure: A History of the World’s Longest Border, which traces the creation of Russia’s boundaries across three continents from the earliest border-making in the medieval period through the frighteningly tumultuous present.
