Renato de Lima Santos was born in Franca (São Paulo State, Brazil) on August 5, 1970. He received a D.V.M. degree from the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG) in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil, in 1993, and a master’s degree from the same institution in 1995. Dr. Santos became a faculty member at UFMG Veterinary School in 1996. He then moved to the United States in 1998 to pursue a Ph.D. program at Texas A&M University, from which he graduated in 2001, then returning to UFMG, where he is currently an associate professor. In 2005 he pursued a short-term graduate training at the Institut Pasteur (Paris, France). In 2006-07 he served as associate visiting professor at the University of California, Davis. He holds a research fellowship from the Brazilian National Research Council (CNPq, Brasília, Brazil) since 2002. Dr. Santos serves as reviewer and member of editorial boards for several scientific journals. He has published several scientific papers mostly in the field of infectious diseases in prestigious journals including Nature Medicine, Cell Host & Microbes, Infection and Immunity, Journal of Infectious Diseases,and Emerging Infectious Diseases, among several others. He has co-authored a textbook, edited another, and authored several book chapters. Dr. Santos currently holds his position as associate professor at UFMG.
