Since 1995, New York-based artist Samuel Nigro has explored the breaking of stone in sculpture, video, performance, writings, and drawings—and most recently (and with the help of a Guggenheim Fellowship) with large blocks of granite.
His methodological framework investigates art as an epistemological manifestation from the interaction of three distinct pressures: agency (and the drive for authenticity of gesture and autonomy of thought), contingency (and the crisis of representation through the infinite regression of causality), and strategy (and the clash of competing claims of authority over representations).
