Graduated from the Chilean School of Cinema, Sebastián Lelio has directed several short films—Four, Chamber Music, 12 minutes, Vital burden, City of wonders, the kulechov effect—and has worked sporadically in documentaries (Mi mundo privado, Cero).

In 2006, he premiered La Sagrada Familia (The Sacred Family), his first feature film, at the San Sebastian Film Festival. Shot in only three days and edited for over a year, La Sagrada Familia was supported by the Hubert Bals Funds for the post-production, was screened at more than 100 film festivals, and won several international prizes. Among these honors were Best Feature and Critics award, Toulouse Film Festival; Gran Prix, Era New Horizons Film Festival in Poland; Best Feature Film, Seoul Film Festival; Jury Special Prize, Vladivostok Film Festival; Best Film, Transilvania International Film Festival, Romania; Signis award in Buenos Aires Film Festival; five Pedro Sienna awards; Best Feature Film of the year, Chilean Critics Association.

His second feature film, Navidad, was supported by the Cannes Résidence and was premiered in Quinzaine des Realizateurs at the Cannes film festival 2009. Navidad won the Fipresci Award at the Transilvania International Film Festival, Best Director, Viña del Mar International Film Festival, Best Director, Muestra de Santo Domingo, Special Prize, Chilean Film Art Critic´s Circle, and was nominated for eight Pedro Sienna awards in the Chilean national cinema competition.

Currently he is finishing his third feature film, The year of the tiger (supported by the FFA, Chilean cinema awards, for the post-production), that will be premiered in the international competition of the Locarno Film Festival.
