SCHUMAN, WILLIAM HOWARD:  Appointed for creative work in musical composition; tenure, twelve months from June 15, 1939.

Born August 4, 1910, in New York City.  Education:  Columbia University, B.S., 1935, M.A., 1937. Juilliard School of Music, Summers, 1932, 1933; Mozarteum Academy, Salzburg, Summer, 1935. Private musical studies with Max Persin, Charles Haubiel, Roy Harris.

Member of the Arts Faculty, 1935—, and Director of Chorus, 1938—, Sarah Lawrence College.

Principal compositions:  Four Chorale Canons, performed at several concerts by the Madrigal Singers, and by the choir of Teachers College, in New York and Salzburg, 1935; Symphony No. 1, performed by the New York Civic Orchestra, 1936; String Quartet No. 1,  performed at the Composers’ Forum Laboratory, 1936; Pioneers, performed by the Westminster Festival Choir, Princeton, New Jersey, 1938; <i style="mso-bidi-font-style:

normal;”>String Quartet No. 2, performed by the Forum Quartet at the Composers’ Forum Laboratory, Bronxville, and for broadcasting, and by the Walden Quartet, Yaddo Festival of American Music, and for broadcasting, 1938; Symphony No. 2, performed by the Greenwich Orchestra, by the Columbia Broadcasting Orchestra, 1938, and by the Boston Symphony Orchestra, 1939; Prologue for Chorus and Orchestra, performed by the Federal Symphony Orchestra of New York and Chorus of the High School of Music and Art, 1939.
