Alexander Nagel is Craig Hugh Smyth Professor of Fine Arts at NYU’s Institute of Fine Arts. His writings approach visual art in a global context, studying how art allows humans to think through time and find orientation in the world. He is the author or editor of 10 books, including Amerasia, co-authored with Elizabeth Horodowich (Zone Books, 2023), Medieval Modern: Art Out of Time (Thames & Hudson, 2012), The Controversy of Renaissance Art (Chicago University Press, 2021), and Anachronic Renaissance, co-authored with Christopher Wood (Zone Books, 2010).
