Alistair M. Duckworth

Alistair Duckworth is Professor Emeritus of English at the University of Florida. He has an M.A. from the University of Edinburgh and an M.A. and Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University. He has taught at the University of Virginia, SUNY Buffalo, Mount Holyoke College, and the University of Florida (1973-2003). Following retirement in 2003, he was employed by Florida State University in London and Florence from 2003 to 2008. He was a visiting fellow at Magdalen College, Oxford, in 1988. He has written books on Jane Austen and E. M. Forster, co-authored a monograph on literature and landscape in the eighteenth century, published more than a hundred chapters, articles, essays, and reviews, and edited Forster’s Howards End and Austen’s Emma. He served on the Editorial Board of the Cambridge edition of Jane Austen (9 volumes, 2005-09) and has recently lectured on Jane Austen at the University of Bologna, Goldsmith’s College of the University of London, the University of Lincoln, the University of Aberdeen, and the Scottish Branch of the Jane Austen Society. In 1998, he was made T. Walter Herbert Commemorative Term Professor at UF, and in 1999, following five teaching awards at the University of Florida, he received an Outstanding Teacher Award from the South Atlantic Association of Departments of English.
