Dana A. Salvo

Dana Salvo received the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship in 1988, as well as a subsequent Subvention for Publication. He has twice received the Fulbright Scholar Award. A nationally recognized photographer, his work has been the subject of numerous solo exhibitions throughout the United States. He has also received grants from the Lila Wallace Fund; the Asian Cultural Council; the Massachusetts Cultural Council; the Berkshire Taconic Foundation’s Artist Resource Trust; the LEF Foundation; and several other awards which assist artists in mid-career. His work is represented in numerous collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, MOMA, The Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the Fogg Art Museum, San Francisco MOMA, the Houston Museum of Fine Arts, and the Addison Gallery of American Art.

Salvo is the author of Home Altars of Mexico. Published simultaneously by the University of New Mexico Press in the United States as well as Thames and Hudson in Great Britain. For more than ten years, Salvo and his family, artist Dawn Southworth and two daughters Jahna and Simone, traveled throughout the central highlands and southern states of Mexico. They visited the Purepehcan Indians in Michoacan, the Chamulan and Zinacantan tribes in Chiapas, the Maya of the Yucatan peninsula, and several other isolated groups in the rural countryside. At the heart of many homes in Mexico is the altarcito, or home altar, which creates a focus of intricate and sincere spirituality with profound personal and familial meaning reflecting the vitality of Mexico’s spiritual practices.

He and Dawn Southworth own Clark Gallery in Massachusetts. Clark Gallery exhibits contemporary art in all media by emerging, mid-career, and established artists from the Northeast and nationally, including a number of Guggenheim Fellows. The gallery’s exhibition program reflects a broad range of twentieth-century ideas appealing to collectors and institutions with diverse interests. Clark Gallery is one of New England’s leading art galleries and a member of the Boston Art Dealers Association. Located just outside Boston in Lincoln, Massachusetts, an area known for its rich cultural offerings, Clark Gallery is minutes from the DeCordova Museum and Sculpture Park and the Walter Gropius House in Lincoln, as well as the Rose Art Museum in neighboring Waltham.
