Lorie Novak’s photo-based works use various technologies of representation to explore issues of memory and transmission, identity and loss, presence and absence, shifting cultural meanings of photographs, and the relationship between the intimate and the public. She has been the recipient of New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowships, a NEA Fellowship, Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Grant, and residencies at the Rockefeller Foundation’s Bellagio Center, Bogliasco Foundation, ArtSway, MacDowell, Yaddo, and the Djerassi Foundation. Her photographs are in numerous museum collections including the Art Institute of Chicago; The Jewish Museum, NY; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; and Museum of Modern Art, NY. Solo exhibitions include Photoville, Brooklyn, NY; International Center for Photography, NY; Center for Creative Photography, Tucson; Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; and Stanford University Art Museum. Group exhibitions include ones at the Museum of Modern Art, The Smithsonian Institution, Art Institute of Chicago, Hood Museum, and Fotodok, Utrecht, the Netherlands, among others. Her web project collectedvisions.net, 1996-present, exploring how family photographs shape our memory was one of the earliest interactive storytelling sites. Born in Los Angeles, she lives in Brooklyn, NY and is Professor of Photography and Imaging at New York University Tisch School of the Arts.
